چکیده

OBJECTIVES In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of study on early diagnosis of kidney injury through sensitive and specific biomarkers. We examined the practical applicability of the urinary levels of NAG (N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase), AP (alkaline phosphatase), and LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) as renal dysfunction screening biomarkers in full and pre-term newborns treated with gentamicin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fourteen pre-term and fifteen full-term newborns who received gentamicin for suspected infections were enrolled. Serum and urine specimens were obtained before the zero days and after gentamicin infusion on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th days of treatment. RESULTS In full-term newborns a significant increase in urinary NAG, LDH, AP after 5 days of gentamicin administration compared with control group was noted (P<0.05, P<0.001 and P<0.01; respectively). CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that urinary enzymes may be useful in full-term newborns as a non-invasive method for evaluation of tubular function.

Protective Effect of Safranal against Gentamicin-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Rat

Gentamicin is an important aminoglycoside antibiotic. However its use is limited to serious and life threatening gram negative infections, because of its high nephrotoxicity potential in patients. There are reports that safranal, the active ingredient of saffron with antioxidant properties, exerts protective effect against ischemic injuries occurred by certain nephrotoxins including gentamicin....

Evaluation of Urinary Tract Infection in Newborns with Jaundice in South of Iran

Background: Neonatal jaundice is clinically presented in 60% of full-term newborns. About 8% of newborns with jaundice have urinary tract infection (UTI) without any other clinical signs in favor of UTI. In present study we evaluated clinical and paraclinical data that help to rapid and early diagnosis of UTI in apparently healthy newborns with jaundice. Methods: From February to August 2006, 5...

Clinical Pharmacokinetics of Gentamicin in Neonates

Gentamicin is a bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic, it inhibits the protein synthesis. Gentamicin is active against the majority of aerobic gram-negative bacilli such as Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and Escherichia coli. The gentamicin doses are 3 mg/kg once-daily for preterm newborns < 35 weeks of gestation and 4 mg/kg once-daily for newborns > 35 weeks of gestation. The monitoring of gentamici...

Background: Gentamicin is an aminoglycosides antibiotic which is used to treat several types of bacterial infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Nigella sativa L. extract (NSE) on liver toxicity and serum level of liver enzymes in rats induced by gentamicin. Methods: In the present experimental study, 42 Wistar male rats were divided randomly into 6 groups includes: c...
